The moment Gladys Berejiklian refuses to answer questions about WHY Bunnings is still open during lockdown - as debate erupts over whether the hardware superstore is 'essential'

I will have hella more in just a few, I will be super editing this piece...
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian ignores questions about Bunnings being open
Bunnings was closed in Victoria last year, except to essential tradespeople
Meanwhile Queensland shoppers have been warned over non-essential buys
'Why is Bunnings open' Sky News' Andrew Clennell asked Ms Berejiklian
The Premier shifted her gaze to another reporter and said: 'Next question'
Premier Gladys Berejiklian has refused to answer questions about why Bunnings warehouses remain open despite the superstore repeatedly popping up on exposure site lists.
The NSW Premier was grilled by Sky News' Andrew Clennell at her daily press update on Wednesday after reporting 233 new cases of the virus overnight, including 47 infectious in the community.
Clennell asked Ms Berejiklian why a range of shops including the Reject Shop and Bunnings keep popping up on the state's list of exposure sites when essential retail is meant to be closed
Why aren't some of these businesses shut? Why are people still travelling to work?
'Can't you go harder with this lockdown because what you are doing at the moment haven't reducing the numbers?'
The Premier claimed NSW's lockdown rules were 'some of the harshest' the nation had seen, but admitted 'non-critical retail' such as the Reject Shop should be closed.
'Why is Bunnings open?' Clennell asked, before incorrectly stating the warehouses are shut in Queensland.
The Premier turned her gaze away from the reporter and said 'next question', ignoring his attempts at a follow-up.
Ms Berejiklian's dodge - to a journalist she regularly jousts with - sparked uproar on social media given the store often appears on exposure site lists.
Business journalist and commentator Janine Perrett tweeted: 'Poor form. Berejiklian is asked a very valid question as to why so many Bunnings are turning up on exposure sites and still open to public and she simply refuses to answer.
Under Victoria's Stage Four lockdown restrictions, Bunnings was closed except to tradespeople seeking items for essential or emergency repair work.
Likewise, most big box stores, including Kmart, were closed in Melbourne except for click-and-collect purchases - a measure which NSW hasn't adopted.
One Twitter user suggested Victoria's approach to Bunnings was a model for NSW. 'It's not rocket science.
'People can do click and collect so it's not a 'lockdown' more an alternative opening, plus (it) stops a lot of unnecessary purchasing.'
Others disagreed - arguing it was 'generally a pretty low risk environment' with 'massive air space'.
'Better to have people doing repairs at home than out and about especially as the lockdown drags on. I think the implication of the question was about having favourites'.
Clennell later asked NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant if she had advised Bunnings should remain open, or whether Ms Berejiklian had made a political call to do so .
Dr Chant responded by saying large stores weren't driving transmission of the highly infectious Delta variant in NSW.
'I've got to say, in terms of large supermarkets or large spaces - are not actually driving transmission.
'As I've indicated before, occasionally we've had a handful of transmission events in supermarkets.
'But I can't stress enough that every time you are out and about, please do your part by minimising the number of stores you enter'.
Dr Chant said NSW is under one of the most tight lockdowns 'we've ever had'.
Mobility data shows movements in Sydney are down to the levels Melbourne had during its long 2020 lockdown, she added.
Dr Chant meanwhile put the state's Hunter and Newcastle region - more than 100km away from Sydney - on alert after fragments of Covid-19 were found in sewage testing.
She said the virus had been detected at three sewerage plants which serve about 225,800 residents and called for higher rates of testing across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
Ms Berejiklian meanwhile called for NSW residents of all ages to get vaccinated a day after flagging Sydney could start opening up from lockdown in stages once six million jabs are in arms across NSW.
'We can't stress how important it is to come forward and get vaccinated. If you are vaccinated you are staying out of hospital, staying out of the ICU and helping to reduce the spread of the virus.'
Two-thirds of all of NSW's cases during the latest outbreak are under 40-years-old, the state's health minister Brad Hazzard said.
'We’re very lucky to have a vaccine - lucky to have a number of vaccines - so my strong encouragement to young people, to older people, is: go and get it,' he said.
The cluster of cases that began in Sydney's eastern suburbs on June 16 has now reached 4,063 cases and Ms Berejiklian again warned the outbreak would get worse before it gets better.
'I'm not going to rule out case numbers won't get worse - I actually think they will get worse,' she said.
'If you look at the number infectious in the community, it indicates that perhaps we haven't reached our peak.'
'We are dealing with one of the most challenging times we have ever experienced as a nation,' she said after a record 174 venues were added to NSW's spiralling list of coronavirus exposure sites overnight.
She called for Sydneysiders to more strictly follow the rules of the Harbour City's stay-at-home orders and revealed authorities were still finding cases where residents were flouting lockdown rules or not self-isolating properly.
She said the bulk of transmission in Sydney was still being found in the city's households and workplaces.
'The numbers are going up because we have a high number of people still infectious in the community,' Dr Chant said.
'We are still having people who are still not isolating. We are still seeing people visiting their families.'
She asked the city's five million locked-down residents 'to do their bit' by further limiting how often they leave their home.
'If you can go shopping once every three days - if you are able to do that - then please do,' she said. 'This is not the time for going into five or six shops.'
More than two thirds of the new cases were found in Sydney's west and south-west, where health officials recorded 153 infections in the 24 hours to 8pm on Wednesday.
The 174 new exposure sites announced overnight are spread across 80 suburbs and include 20 Woolworths supermarkets, three Bunnings, five Coles and a host of cafes, pharmacists and grocery stores.
The worst-hit area is Cabramatta with a whopping 14 sites, including a range of financial branches such as ANZ, a Commonwealth Bank branch and ATM, Westpac, Captain Cash Loans, Hai Ha Money Transfer and Western Union.
Customers who shopped at any of the venues listed have been told to isolate until a negative test is received.
Everyday Happy Shoes is also on the list, as well as New Good Luck Butchery, Phuong Thao Fruit Ang Vegetable, Sharetea Cabramatta, Viet Hoa Seafoods and Woolworths Cabramatta which is listed between July 21 and 28.
Bankstown came a close second with 11 exposure sites, including Woolworths at Centro Shopping Centre which is listed 13 times under various dates spanning July 20 to July 31 after infected staff unknowingly worked with the virus.
An Aldi supermarket in Bankstown is also an exposure site, along with a BWS liquor store, a post office, Baby Bunting, three pharmacies, a kebab shop, bakery and a fruit store.
A Woolworths supermarket on Patrick Street was also on the list, along with Good Luck Meat, Daily Bread Shop, Coles and Broaster chicken.
In Campsie, also in Sydney's west, there were ten sites including Chemist Warehouse, Discount Drug Store, Alan Lo Chemist, Canaan Supermarket and Wholesale, Om Sri Stores, The World of Fruit and Woolworths
Pendle Hill recorded ten infection sites, including 7-Eleven on Wentworth Avenue which has exposure five dates spanning from July 14 to 26.
CTC Pendle Hill is also on the list, along with Metro Petroleum, Pendle Hill Fish Market, Halal Meat, Mediadvice Pharmacy, Rajah Supermarket and Woolworths.
Other affected suburbs in the west included Parramatta with seven sites, Casula with five sites, Seven Hills with seven, Doonside with two, Hurstville with three, Quakers Hill with two and Wentworthville with three.
Further east, a person infected with Covid went to Chemist Warehouse on Pitt Street in the Sydney CBD on July 23 between 6.20pm and 6.40pm, and Guzman Y Gomez at Broadway Shopping Centre on July 29 between 8.05pm and 8.15pm.
The outbreak in the city's north appears to be fairly contained, with one site listed in Macquarie Park - an Aldi at the Macquarie Centre between 4pm and 4.30pm on July 24.
