POPEn Ent.'s "My Great Grandfather Told Me..." #HIDstoryLesson Series - Chapter 2 Episode 7

Welcome,

Greetings and Salutations to the Village members and future Village members alike.

Welcome to Episode 2 of Chapter 7 - "Toxines" is the topic and we are learning #FaxOverFixedShun from my Great Grandfather who is one of the greatest #DoctorsOfMedicine #GreatGrandfather #HIDstorian this planet has ever known.

POPE Ben E. Ficial the First: "We did Episode 6 in the midst of the powers that never should have been i the first place birthplace. Episode 7 should elevate us to a level with where our head's been."

Great Grandfather Dr. Ernest C. Dickson MD: "Finally, we have a very important physiological characterization which consists in stimulating the body to the production of neutralizing substances. If you inoculate an animal with strychnia, if you give the animal enough to kill it, the animal dies ; if you give it a small amount - not enough to cause death, then after a certain amount of time the animal excretes this strychnia and after the time of excretion is past the animal is quite as sensitive to the action of strychnia as it was originally.

POPE Ben E. Ficial the First: "That sounds like something they just did to millions of people?! If I'm not mistaken, it sounds like a current issue at hand!"

Great Grandfather Dr. Ernest C. Dickson MD: "If you give the animal a sufficient amount of toxine to kill it, the animal dies; if you give it a small amount, less than enough to kill it, the animal will recover, but during its recovery the animal produces a certain substance which neutralizes this toxine and this substance is known as the antitoxine. Antitoxines are substances which neutralize the toxines. If you give the animal a sufficiently large dose of the toxine to kill it and if you examine the blood serum of such an animal just before death or after death you will find some of the toxine. If you give it a small quantity, less that enough to kill it, then for a certain amount of time you will find the substance in the blood. Subsequently it disappears from the circulation and if you again examine the blood serum you will find this new substance which was not there originally, which has the power of neutralizing the toxine. The most important characteristic of all for the toxines is the fact that they produce when given to animals in small amounts antitoxic substances.

You will see from these definitions, that they are based upon what we know about the toxines I have mentioned. I might say that with the diphtheria bacillus, with the tetanus bacillus and with the B. botulinus one can produce typical antitoxines in animals. On the basis of this fact the reasoning is valuable, to a certain extent in helping us to classify these substances, but if we said that all substances like the toxine of diphtheria or of tetanus or if the B. botulinus form a type in that they produce antitoxines and then attempt to classify other substances and say that such substances cannot be called toxines because they do not produce antitoxines, then to a certain extent we are in difficulties. As a matter of fact, there are a large number of other substances which fulfill most of the laws I have already mentioned ; which have a definite period of incubation; which act upon definite cells, and produce definite lesions and yet they do not stimulate animals to the production of antitoxines. The question is shall we call such substances toxines? It is generally believed now that we should not; that wherever it has been shown by experimental work that you cannot produce an antitoxine for a substance, that substance - no matter if the other characteristics of the substance are correct - you should not include in the group of the true toxines. We limit the term "true toxines" to the substances having the characteristics I have spoke of - specificity, and incubation period, and especially the power of stimulating animals to the production of anittoxines."

POPE Ben E. Ficial the First: "If this didn't make sense like change for a dollar, I wouldn't even hollar. I can't wait until Episode 8 as we do our homework and research our research and check our rechecks."
