POPE Ben E. Ficial the First: "There was a rumor going around that snake venom was being used in some of the elixirs that was being given to us, in addition to what was supposed to make us better. This makes more sense now that you have been making this knowledge available to us. This being Episode 8 and final Episode of this Chapter, tell us more about the "Toxines!"
Great Grandfather Dr. Ernest C. Dickson MD: "Since the discovery of these various toxines spoken of in a narrower sense, a very large number of substances have been investigated and it has been shown that some of them correspond to the bacterial toxines. We have in addition to the true bacterial toxines certain substances which are found in plants ; the most important of those substances are ricin, abrin, and crotin. These are poisonous substances found in certain plants and in all cases they are characterized by producing certain lesions, and especially by the fact that one can produce antitoxines for them. One can make an anti-ricin, an anti-abrin and an anti-crotin. A good deal of work has been done on the chemistry of these substances and it is usually believed that they are proteid in character. They go usually by the name of toxalbumins, and Ehrlich believes that they are all proteid or proteid derivatives.
Finally, we have another group of bodies to which we may now pass. These are poisons produced by venomous snakes and by certain of the reptiles, especially the poisons of cobra, the rattlesnake, scorpions and toads. All of these animals secrete poisonous substances. These substances introduced subcutaneously produce definite lesions and have a specificity in that they act upon certain definite cells. In all cases you can make antitoxines for these substances. You cannot make antitoxines of the same value as the diphtheria or tetanus antitoxines, but by inoculating small doses of these substances in animals you can stimulate those animals to the production of a substance which neutralizes the poison that has been introduced. You can say therefore, that these substances can be characterized in the same way as the bacterial poisons, and in a broad sense we classify all of these substances together. We speak first, of the bacterial toxines, like those of tetanus and diphtheria, then of the vegetable toxines like ricin and abrin, and then of the animal toxines, the poisonous secretions of cobras, rattlesnakes, etc."
